Star ratings on booking platforms are self-reported, so the label alone tells you little. Four things decide whether a property makes our shortlist.

Why the label alone tells you little
A resort with a dedicated guest-relations team behaves very differently from one running on a skeleton crew in low season. That gap never shows up in a star rating.

Which resorts actually suit families
Family suitability varies more between properties than listings admit. Kuta Mandalika's larger international-brand resorts tend to score best, since they were built with family capacity in mind. Boutique north-west properties lean toward couples.

For a honeymoon or a milestone trip the jump from suite to pool villa is usually worth paying — a private pool changes the stay more than a room upgrade does.

It depends on the trip. Senggigi is the easiest first choice for couples and the closest to the airport. Kuta Mandalika suits families and surf-and-resort combinations. Sire and Medana Bay suit honeymooners who want calm water and minimal noise. The Gilis suit divers and snorkellers who want a car-free setting.
Some are, but not all. Look for a shallow protected swim area, connecting or multi-room suites, and a kids' programme during peak weeks. These vary between properties, and we check each one before recommending it for a family booking.
Six to nine months ahead for the July–August and year-end peak, and earlier still if your dates overlap the Mandalika MotoGP weekend, when south-coast inventory sells out fastest. Shoulder months such as May and November usually give dry-season weather at softer rates.
